Announcements from Sprint
Spokespersons for Sprint discussed today what Sprint’s plans for the future are regarding 4G and other technology. Sprint plans to create a multi-mode network platform that will enable various technologies to be deployed on a common platform, while also lowering costs.
The topic of Sprint’s partnership with LightSquared was only brought up. Sprint plans to host the LightSquared service on the 1600 MHz frequency; however, this is pending FCC approval. Sprint also plans to wholesale the 2500 Mhz WiMAX spectrum through an agreement with Clearwire.
The next topic for discussion was the network vision progress. When the iPhone 4s becomes available on October 14, Sprint plans to be prepared with improvements to cell sites. Sprint currently has worked on 22,000 cell sites for 3G/4G technology. New tower arrangements will be in place to avoid having customers roam on other networks.
Sprint will partner with Alcatel Lucent, Samsung, and Ericsson to turn their three existing networks into one unified network, supporting Sprint Direct Connect, 3G, and 4G LTE networks.
Customers can also look forward to dual mode CDMA/LTE phones and other devices by the middle of 2012. Mobile hotspots, machine to machine apps, cell phones, and embedded modules with LTE will be part of the dual mode technology.
Sprint also announced that the iDEN network should be completely migrated by the middle of 2013, providing three times better coverage.
