Sprint has just confirmed in correspondence to the Goldie Group that customers will no longer be able to obtain one year renewal contracts. These changes, which will occur on October 2nd, will affect both new and existing customers.

If a customer wants to get a discount on a new phone, the customer will be forced to get a two year contract. Customers previously could extend their contracts for one year and get a $75 markdown on a new device.

Customers will still have the option of paying on a month to month basis after their contract expires, but they will not receive any discounts on the cost of purchasing a new phone.

Sprint has stated that this change will not affect the majority of their customer base because most of their customers already choose a two year contract. They also noted that their main competitor, Verizon, recently cut their one year plans as well.

On October 2, Sprint will also roll out a policy change that caps their mobile hotspot service at 5 GB. Sprint also intends to launch its DirectConnect service which is powered by the carriers CDMA network on the same day.
